Maybe you can relate to my story...

➡️ I was first asked to play acoustic guitar (first and last time someone actually NEEDED an acoustic guitar over bass and drums...weird) for a college service our church was starting. During the first rehearsal the 'worship leader' (who was a drummer at heart) fired the current drummer right then and there...a little awkward. I didn't care. I was playing with an ACTUAL band for the first time in my life. He asked me to sing the songs until they could find another leader. And I never stopped!

➡️ I continued to get reps in as the service took off but I made a lot of mistakes. I said a lot of bad things. I wasn't a good leader. I honestly had no idea what I was even doing. 

God put me in ministry so I would grow to love the local church. 

➡️ After many years, my heart grew for the local church. I understood that God's love for me was coupled with His love for His people. The gathering is not just some 'thing' we do because we've always done it. No. The gathering is a special rhythm in the life of a Christ-follower. It forms and shapes us more and more into the image of Himself.  

Worship Ministry is not a light-hearted endeavor 

➡️ The more time I spent in ministry the more I realized I was greatly under-educated and ill-equipped. I needed to take this seriously if I was going to make any kind of lasting impact. My heart was growing for God and His people, and what followed was a desire to learn more about Him. 

Seminary and Church-Planting revealed a need for more worship leaders. 

➡️ As I soaked up knowledge and wisdom from my seminary classes, I realized that there are a lot of people who desire preaching and church-planting. But I noticed that the thought of music fell to the back burner and wasn't thought of again until someone realized "we have no-one to do music!" It's almost as if music is seen as an add-on to the gathering. But it's much more than that. I then realized that we needed an army of equipped worship leaders whose heart is for Bible-saturated singing in the local church. 

Good musicians aren't enough!

➡️  The struggle to find someone who has a heart for the local church, a developed theology of worship, and is also a skilled musician is a difficult task on its own. But add that they need to know how to build a worship ministry (resource teams, communicate clearly, set goals, plan gatherings, lead spiritually and pastorally) is a VERY tall order. And this is currently plaguing our churches. I know because I get multiple emails and texts every month asking me if I have a secret chamber of willing and ready worship leaders. I'll just go ahead and say, I wish I did, but I don't.
